Another Candy Hearts Quilt

I got an email a couple of weeks ago from Cherry at Cherry Blossoms Quilting Studio. She made the most adorable quilt using the Candy Hearts embroidery set. This is her adorable quilt. It’s a mini – but just think of the wonderful ways to use this –from a banner/ wall hanging to a table topper.

XOXO by Cherry Blossoms Quilting Studio

In fact, I was so inspired by this, that I took the stack of assorted hearts that I had and stitched them together. In the end I had five different toppers. Here are a couple of photos.

The one thing I realized later after looking at the photo of what Cherry has done and then at the hearts I stitched together, is that her hearts are on a much smaller background and are nestled closer together. If I were doing it again, I definitely would do it her way.

A couple of weeks ago, I saw this blog post by Megan over at Canoe Ridge Creations. I was really intrigued by the quilting on her mini-quilt, so I just had to try it. And I had the perfect table … Continue reading

Crazy Hearts

Just wanted to show you some pictures of the crazy hearts quilt that I’m quilting this week. My friend, Sherry pieced this from a set of embroidery hearts I gave her. The hearts are made from crumb blocks and are cut with my AccuQuilt GO™ hearts die like this. They are cut from fabric that is randomly pieced together from scraps.

And then they are stitched onto background fabric with the basic hearts machine embroidery set.

And this is the way I’m quilting these. I am using this quilt to practice the swirls that I plan to use on Sherry’s bargello quilt.

Day 4 Machine Embroidery Blog Hop – Turtles

Kelly at I Have A Notion (IHAN) is today’s blogger. And she is amazing–she broke her hand last week at Quilt Market and is still stitching and blogging away.  I do not know how she does it.

And I have been browsing around the IHAN store. If you haven’t been there, you should stop in and browse. She has quite a wonderful selection of quilting and stitching and crafting supplies, but especially some wonderful machine embroidery supplies–there are some scissors there that I must have, and I want to try a couple of her stabilizers. In addition, she has a folio blank in several colors for machine embroidery that I think will make a perfect Christmas gifts with some of my machine embroidery designs on the insert instead of the monogram.

And yesterday I got a fabric package in the mail. This fabric is absolutely luscious. It is The Woodlands Palette hand dyed by Vicki Welsh. I have wanted to buy her fabric for a long time and finally took that big step. It is even nicer than I had imagined. The fabric is the perfect thread count for quilting and the colors are beautiful. I can see using some of the machine embroidery designs using this fabric. I love the gradations and the soft, clear intensity of these colors.

Day 3 Machine Embroidery Blog Hop – Fall Medley

Today is Day 3 (and the day after the election) of the ME blog hop and SewCalGal has some great machine embroidery fun for you.

In addition, I’d like to share a couple of links to encourage all quilters to donate quilts to victims of the Hurricane Sandy disaster in the northeast. You can be sure that both of these organizations will deliver. Here are the links:

Day 2 Machine Embroidery Blog Hop

I am just blown away with the creative ideas that Trish at All Things Crafty has for using the Sue and Sam machine embroidery sets. I can’t wait to try her ideas, and I won’t have to wait long because today is a teacher workday and my grandchildren will be visiting, What fun!

Mug Rugs for Halloween

These little mug rugs turned out to be so cute. And the grandchildren love them. I think I’ll have to make enough to give away to them and their friends  - or maybe I could give them to trick or treaters instead of candy. These were so much fun to make – I fell in love with machine embroidery applique using die cut shapes all over again.

When I started these, my goal was to make a set of machine embroidery applique designs that could go in my shop for Halloween and that would use the Accuquilt Circle Die as the shape. I actually purchased these designs for digitizing – it’s the first time I have purchased designs rather than sketching them myself. There are still some design tweaks that need to be done. Count Dracula is going to get some changes as is one of the pumpkins.

As I worked, I realized that it would be nice to have them as mug rugs, but in order to do them in the hoop the size would be limited. The first ones I made were square and the front and back were cut using the 6″ finished square die. I tried a rectangular one that would fit a 5 x 7″ hoop, but it was really too small for the witch design. So, I threw caution to the wind and made a larger rectangular one that would fit a 6 x 8″ hoop. And I love it. So, for mug rugs in the hoop, I think one has to have a larger hoop. My Viking has an 8 x 10″ hoop, so with a little more experimentation, I think I could come up with a larger one.

The other part that was important to me was to have the edges finished with a seam. Thus, I layered stabilizer, batting, and fabric and then stitched the design. After the design was finished, I added the backing with right sides together and let the machine stitch the backing onto the front. The mug rug is then removed from the machine and turned right side out and the opening is hand stitched or fabric glued together.

Flower Circles Quilt Story

Every quilt has a story and this story isn’t finished yet. I had seen a beautiful quilt that had circles on a line, so that inspired me to do something with the rickrack die and the flower circles. Choosing colors is never easy for me – and I had a lot of the gray batik for background fabric. I decided on a scrappy look for the circles as I had quite a few circles that were cut and wanted to use them up. All said, now that this is complete, I am feeling only lukewarm toward it as a quilt top. Quilting often is what “makes” the quilt, so this top still has one more redemption opportunity.

I guess the moral of this story is that not every idea is a success. Here’s the top – unquilted.

Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer

After taking a few days off, yesterday has my quilting life back on track and moving again. Maybe it was going non-stop from April through June that slowed me down in July. Thus, when the opportunity for a beach trip came along, I took advantage. It was a fun trip with family including the grandchildren.

In June, I had so much fun making flowers out of circles that circle flower ideas have been floating around in my head. I have seen a couple of quilts with circles and other shapes on straight lines that look like ribbons running through the quilt. So, with a play on that idea, I used the narrow part of the Accuquilt GO! RickRack die to make strips to go across a 40 x 60″ piece of fabric. And I’m doing MEA (machine embroidery applique) circle flowers randomly along the rickrack. Not sure how this will turn out. It almost seems the flowers are a little small, or I didn’t stitch the rickrack close enough together, but since it’s random, I’ll see how this turns out. Please–suggestions are welcome.

Here’s progress so far:

This is the 40 x 60″ fabric with rickrack attached.

And here it is with one flower complete. That’s at an angle looking down – I’ll try to get a better photo tomorrow. I’m working on a t-shirt quilt, so can let the embroidery machine stitch while I work on the t-shirt quilt.
