Piecing Block 2 Broken Dishes Qube Workout

It’s Monday and time for a new block. This week’s block is very simple. It is either a half square triangle, a Signature block, or a trapezoid block. Make 20 blocks and arrange them around the four Broken Dishes center blocks that were done last week. I am making two quilts. One of the quilts is with the 8″ Qube and is scrappy and the new block added is the Signature block. The second quilt is with the 12″ Qube and I am using a deep burgundy/wine with some medium color fabric that was in my stash from a project that I worked on with my Mom many years ago. The new block added is a half square triangle. The pictures are below. I love how bright the scrappy quilt is and I love how the pieced blocks frame the stars.

You will find instructions to each of three variations for this border in the QAL menu at the top of the blog.

My blog is about helping other quilters learn to use great tools in their quilting through what I can teach and through finding other bloggers who have good information. In addition, I am a mother and grandmother. Other hobbies include any other stitchery which makes me happy at the moment. I worked in clinical research for most of my career. I am now retired and enjoying every minute.

  1. Hanks so much for the great instructions and pictures. I love the scrappy version of this, but I don’t know how much fabric total I need. I will be doing this in my motorhome, so I can’t just keep going back to my stash. Can I just divide the fabric needed for dark and medium by how many colors I am choosing, or do I need to plan on some extra for inefficient cutting? If so, how much? I am doing this with a 12” Qube.

    1. Hi Pam, I think if you add the amounts for all the fabrics and divide it up among the colors you want to use, you’ll be fine if you’re doing scrappy. For my 12″ Qube, I don’t have enough of the medium but more than enough of the dark, so I’m just switching some of those out for the borders, etc. And it never hurts to have a little extra fabric. I am world famous for doing my precuts wrong and then losing inches across the width of fabric. And that is especially true with the 12″ Qube. On the scrappy I’m thinking of using my Shape 8 rectangle die to make a scrappy border. This is one of those quilts that you can change things around as far as colors and you won’t go wrong.

  2. How can I join the group? I have 9″ mix and match and just ordered the angles and corners so I think I am ready to get my fabric and start. The links will not open. 🙁

    1. Hi Kat, You can join the Facebook Group ‘AccuQuilt Qube Quilts’ by searching for the group and requesting to join. You must answer all three questions in order to be approved for membership. Some of the links were updated on the QAL page in the menu at the top of the blog and the old links removed, so that may be why you could not open some of the links. Try them now and see if they work.
