QUBE QAL for January-February 2022

What a way to start our QAL on the first Monday of January 2022. Yesterday we had a big storm – first there was much thunder, lightning, and flooding rain with a 25 degree temperature drop and then big flakes of snow for four hours. In the late afternoon we had beautiful sunshine.  Our electricity went off around 5 am and it didn’t come back on until 6 pm so we had a long, cold, dark day. Very obviously, not much stitching was done nor did we have internet connectivity.

Our QAL will start today on a Tuesday. I have created a new page where I will post all of the information. Please check the menu at the top of the blog for a page with links to each step in the QAL. Weather permitting, each new block will be posted on Mondays.

  1. I moved a few months ago and my sewing barn didn’t catch up with me for two months so just getting to sewing now but it is not heated at night maybe move in house to cut and sew! Yep that’s it. Can’t wait to get going! Thanks for making it

    2. Susan, I moved 18-months ago and had the same challenge, sort of. I have a room above my garage that is a fourth bedroom with a full bath and I thought it would make a great sewing and craft room because it is huge and away from the activity of the house. The problem for me is that it was away from the other activity. I had no idea how much time I spent crafting/sewing/embroidering while cooking. I cannot hear or smell what is going on in the kitchen from the craft space and it has been a bit limiting. I am just now figuring it all out. Good luck as you settle in to your new home and creative space.

      1. Kathy, I agree with you. I have my workshop in the upstairs of our house with all the children married and in homes of their own, but it is often hard for me to get upstairs to “work”.

  2. I am currently working on a quilt for a great-nephew’s graduation, but I am really looking forward to using my qubes and companion sets in another quilt. So glad you are doing this!

  3. After buying the complete cube set I found myself not using them, I needed to find a group to join for support and encouragement to kick start using them. I found your site last year while you were working on another quilt and watched patiently, waiting for a new year to begin so I could start a sampler with you! So very excited to learn and use my 9” cube set.

  6. I am so excited about this QAL. I have 6″, 9″, and 12″ Mix and Match Qubes and both angles and corners in the 6″. If I am reading this right, we are using the Mix and Match only, right? I am going to pick my fabrics this evening and hopefully can do that from my stash. I think I will do the 9″. Looking forward to quilting with others and learning more about my Qubes and how to use them. Thanks for hosting this! I would love to know how far-reaching our territory is — I am in Walker, Louisiana, outside of Baton Rouge in south Louisiana.

  7. Marjorie, I love the connector blocks that you have designed. What a great way to set off a sampler quilt and bring cohesion to the overall design.

Kathy, I agree that having my sewing space close to the core activities of the house is the best way to get everything done – sewing, cooking, etc. In my opinion, anyone who suggests just set your sewing space up in a remote are of the house (basement!) should be told to move their TV watching or their hobby/craft to that space.

  10. Thank you for Block #1. I am so excited to get started and test out my fabric selections to make sure they will work for me. I thought it would be easy to pick out three fabrics only — not so much! First, I found out that I don’t purchase 2 1/2 -3 yard pieces without a plan, so other than whites, creams, and ivories, I could not go to my stash for this. So, I went to JoAnn. Two hours later, I left with nothing, which has never happened. They had fabric, but the amount is down by about 20%. And, JoAnn has never been strong on coordinated collections. I had both 50% off and 40% off coupons and the Keepsake Calicos were not on sale, so ready for a coupon; and I still could not find two pieces that were the right two pieces to go with a white or off-white background (my light selection). So, I ended up at Hobby Lobby and found two pieces I like and that should go in my home or many homes because one is predominantly gray which is the current color of my walls and the walls of most of my friends. So, this will be my test drive to see if these will work. Thanks again.

      1. I almost always find that the selections, once placed in a quilt, look great. And still, I fret over it. Sigh. I am enjoying the start of the QAL because I am just getting to know my Accuquilt products. I started with them in July and have used them for one quilt that was in the book that came with my first order. Also did some small projects. But QALs are so much fun because we get to see the same block over and over in amazing fabrics and see how different the outcomes are. And I am amazed that we can all make the same block in so many different sizes without the math that is normally needed.

  13. I’m glad I found this site. I have had my 8″ cube for years and just recently bought the accessories for the cube. Now that I have found you, albeit a little late, I can’t wait to start.
